Do You Really Need Polarized Sunglasses?

It is pretty much considered common knowledge that we need to wear sunglasses outdoors in order to protect our eyes from the harmful effects of sunlight - not jut at the height of summer, but in the winter months as well. However, one thing that we are not yet so knowledgeable about is the use of polarized lenses in our sunglasses. It is one of those things that we keep hearing about, but do not really know exactly why! Let's take a look at polarized sunglasses and why they may be better than regular lenses.
What Are Polarized Lenses?
To begin with, it is useful to understand what polarized lenses actually are. Without turning this into a boring physics lesson, let's first look at how sunlight behaves. The rays of light are either absorbed by the surface they strike, or are reflected in many different directions. When these rays are reflected off of water, or even the shiny hood of your car, they can often create a glare which is not only uncomfortable, but can also be potentially dangerous. Polarized lenses are specially designed to avoid this situation. They contain a filter which only allows vertically oriented light to pass through them, blocking horizontal rays which cause the glare.

What Are The Advantages of Polarized Sunglasses?
Most top of the range sunglasses will use polarized lenses, largely because of the number of benefits which are associated with them. Some of these benefits include:
A reduction in visual discomfort in strong sunlight.
Better contrast and clarity in your vision.
Less chance of eye strain.
No color distortion.
A reduction in reflection of light and the elimination of glare.
What About Disadvantages?
Nothing is perfect and polarized sunglasses are no exception! There are a few disadvantages which counteract the many benefits. The main disadvantage is that they can interfere with the ability to see LCD screens. This means that they are not suitable for anyone operating heavy machinery or who is in control of a vehicle which utilizes a lcd screen.
Who Needs Polarized Sunglasses?
When they first emerged, polarized lenses were favored by those spending time on the water, such as fishermen and sailors. However, today they are worn by all sorts of people. They are particularly useful for those who spend a large amount of time driving and are also popular among sports participants. There are many high street brands and designers offering polarized sunglasses in a range of styles meaning they are now accessible to anyone who is interested in them.
There are now a huge range of designers and retailers who are offering affordable sunglasses for any gender. This makes it easier than ever before to purchase stylish polarized sunglasses.
